There is meaning when an artist's advice is to get better is to practice. There is always room for improvement. You know all those artists you look up to? The reason they are so good at what they do is because they always see things they can work on. While you see a finished piece, they see something as a stepping stone into improving.
Artist is a mindset. I remember a time when I drew a lot. Many pieces per week. I wasn't working to improve anything in my drawings. I just drew what I wanted to the best of my ability and left it at that. People would tell me when they saw them that I was an artist. I didn't agree. I liked to draw but I couldn't consider myself an artist. I didn't know why I had this mindset at the time. Now I understand. I've made the conscious decision to strive to be better than I am now. I have problem areas I can define and will practice more in.
While I don't believe I'm very good at what I do, I love it. I don't draw for anyone but myself. I want to become better for me. There are many careers for artists these days. But never will I try to improve myself for my job. It wil always be for me. And I'll never stop striving to be better.
I am an artist and always will be.
